From Student Idea to National Mission

Green Shield Fire began not in a laboratory. It began as a family conversation in the kitchen which sparked a personal effort to find safe fire-safe gear for Trinity’s fiancé, Christian, a wildland firefighter, soon uncovered a much larger problem. Even when the fire is out, PFAS chemicals from modern fire suppression systems can remain behind in the air, soil, environment and skin. Those early conversations in the kitchen became the beginning of Green Shield Fire’s mission to pursue safer fire suppression solutions.

Green Shield Fire is developing a bio-based hydrogel technology designed to create a lightweight, rapidly deployable thermal and moisture barrier that can extend protection in extreme wildfire conditions—while reducing reliance on persistent chemical fire-retardant formulations. What started with an Esthetician thinking about protecting skin could become a new generation of wildfire protection technology—protecting firefighters, communities, property, and the environment, Green Shield Fire.

That led to a simple question:

Can we fight fire without creating another problem for the people and environment we're trying to protect?

Trinity’s path to Green Shield Fire started with skin.

As an Advanced Esthetician of Spectrum Advanced Aesthetics, Trinity saw how vulnerable skin is to heat, dehydration, and environmental exposure. Firefighters face a much bigger version of that problem—extreme heat, smoke, toxic chemicals, and persistent contaminants that can be absorbed through the skin and lungs, contributing to serious health risks, including cancer.
